Breaks Interstate Park is on the border of Virginia and Kentucky with great trad and sport climbing on bullet hard sandstone. This guidebook contains 350 sport & trad routes, including maps, grading ratings, and gear recommendations.
Breaks Interstate Park encompasses 4500 acres of land, nestled within the Cumberland Mountain Overthrust Block in Kentucky and Virginia. The centerpiece of this park, and its namesake, is the deeply cut chasm through Pine Mountain, carved by the raging waters of southward flowing Russell Fork. At 5.0 miles long and 1000 to 2200 feet deep, this is the largest canyon in the United States east of the Mississippi River, with dramatic 600-vertical foot sandstone outcrops overlooking unbridled torrents.
Climbing was recently established in the Breaks Interstate Park on 2017. Since then hundreds of sport and trad climbs have been established. The Breaks is a unique hidden gem for climbing, hidden in the heart of Appalachia, with route development still ongoing. The Breaks Interstate Park offers sandstone climbing similar to that of the New River Gorge and the Obed with spectacular views.
This guidebook contains 350 sport and trad routes, including maps, grading ratings, and gear recommendations for each climb.
